Abstract:
This thesis was completed in order to understand the historical accuracies of costumes within the film adaptations of Jane Austen’s four most famous novels: Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park, Pride and Prejudice, and Emma. Many analyses have been done on the individual historical accuracies of these movies; however, this thesis will attempt to rank each of the film in terms of historical accuracy against comparison to each other. The first half of the thesis includes in depth research into women’s fashions of the 19th century in all categories including: undergarments, dresses, outerwear, and accessories, while the second half of the thesis includes the analysis portion with a conclusion summarizing all research, analysis, and accuracies of the films. The research was done through a variety of online sources as well as textbooks, the main one being Nineteenth Century Fashion by Penelope Byrde. The analysis of the film’s costumes were analyzed through personally judgement based upon the in depth research conducted and through the reading of online articles about the costume design for the films. The research stated in this thesis concluded that the costumes designed by Alexandra Byrne from the 2020 adaptation of Emma were the most historically accurate, while the costumes designed by Jacqueline Durran from the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice were the least historically accurate.
This collection of poetry is the writing sample that I turned in which granted me my acceptance into Ball State University's English Studies program. It is also a collection of poems that I wrote my senior year of undergrad in some of my poetry classes as well as outside of the classroom. A lot of these poems explore the ideas of heart break, recovery, religion, and nature; which are common themes that I usually tend to gravitate towards when writing poetry.
